Matthew Soojian, a West Chester, PA native turned Philadelphian, started his dance training at The Rock School West. While continuing this education, he attended the Creative and Performing Arts High School of Philadelphia, under the direction of LaDeva Davis. Throughout high school and college, he attended summer programs at Boston Ballet, The Rock School, and BalletX. Matthew joined Footwerx Tap Company in 2008 under the direction of tap master Darrell Williams, and currently serves as both a dancer and an assistant choreographer. In 2014, he graduated from the University of the Arts with a BFA in Ballet Performance, and was the recipient of the 2014 LaVaughn Robinson Tap Award for excellence in tap dance. While studying at UArts he performed works choreographed by Christine Cox, Meredith Rainey, Helen Simoneau, Robert Burden, Molly Misgalla, Scott Jovovich, and Brian Sanders. Matthew danced for Ballet 180 as a company member from 2014-2017, dancing originating roles that include Rumpelstiltskin from Tales from Brothers Grimm and Colby Damon’s On the Shores of the Eastern Seas. A burgeoning choreographer, Matthew creates ballet, tap, and contemporary dances. Matthew presented his work at Koresh’s 2015 and 2017 Come Together Dance Festival, BalletFleming, Ballet 180, Ballet Inc.’s The Series: Vol. III, and continues to co-create Footwerx productions.
